Health Outreach Partners
Peer-to-Peer Conference Calls

HOP is pleased to announce our 2010 National Peer-to-Peer Conference Calls. These valuable opportunities are designed to provide community-based organizations with a real-world perspective on common challenges facing outreach programs. These conference calls will be informational and interactive, enabling health professionals to exchange strategies and best practices.

For three of the four conference calls, experienced panelists have been invited to share their knowledge of specific outreach-related topics. HOP will moderate each call, facilitating a discussion between the panelists and participants.

Examining Challenges and Successes of Reaching Out to Male Farmworkers
May 6, 2010 at 11:00AM PST

While most of the farmworkers in the U.S. are male, adult males comprise of only 25% of migrant and seasonal farmworkers seen by migrant health centers (UDS 2008). Male farmworkers appear to seek medical care less frequently for a variety of reasons, including difficulty taking time off of work, lack of assistance programs available for men, and a lack of knowledge about the health care system. Given the physically-demanding nature of agricultural work, male farmworkers need accessible medical and social services to maintain their health and wellbeing. Outreach programs across the nation are taking creative steps to reach out to this underserved population. During this call, panelists highlight their unique approaches for reaching out to male farmworkers.

Reaching Immigrant Communities in an Anti-Immigrant Climate
June 3, 2010 at 11:00AM PST

Many immigrant populations come to this country in search of a better life, only to be met by what some would characterize as a hostile anti-immigrant climate. This negative environment, marked by a heightened presence of anti-immigrant legislation and discrimination, makes it increasingly difficult for outreach programs to effectively reach out to immigrant populations. The purpose of this call is to sensitize outreach program staff to this topic and present best practices for reaching immigrant communities, especially those that do not have legal documentation status.
